I flew to Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands, on August 5th (arriving on August 6th, with no sunset in between!) to visit a friend who's teaching with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. I stayed there for a week.
Seven degrees above the equator, the Marshalls are a group of atolls of long, skinny coral islands ringing the craters of underwater volcanoes. Although the country calls itself "Pearls of the Pacific," I think Shannon's assertion that the atolls look like rubber bands flung into the middle of the ocean is more accurate.
