Viola

I was a violist for 7 or 8 years, but it's now been about that long since I played. This old girl has sat neglected in my parents' house since then. I still think she's a beautiful instrument. Luckily, one of my little brother's friends is interested in buying her (or was, last I heard). My mom took her in for a spa treatment recently in preparation to be sold. This picture is actually from last month, when I took a few for my brother to give the interested friend. Hopefully she'll have a loving new home soon.

I should start playing again, but I was never a particularly gifted musician--though I was pretty good simply by virtue of having played for a pretty long time--and I'm secretly a little afraid of having to start all over again. Also, I think if I'm going to pick up a string instrument again, I'd rather learn the cello. On which note I'll mention that this post was inspired by Carolina over at Brinkbeest in English. You should check out the two beautiful cello performances in her post.

I've returned from a cruise and I'm sorting my comments. I was delighted to find one from you as you're another 'one a day' freak like me! "I will return'.

Beautiful picture of a beautiful instrument. Will you not regret it if you sold it?
I like you and am now going to find out how I can follow your blog.
Big smiles!

A wonderful instrument. I often listen to classical violin music. I love these wonderful sonatas by Bach, Mozart, Paganini, Mendelsohn ....Thanks for sharing and for your visit!

I love the mellower sounds of the orchestra (viola, cello, French horn) but I can't play any of the instruments that produce them. Instead, I learned to play piano, organ, clarinet, and saxophone.

Why we do such things to ourselves? In my case, our school didn't have an orchestra, only a marching band. And my lips weren't thin enough to play a French horn and turned out to be perfect for the reeds. I'm not unhappy to know how to play and piano and an organ, though. I haven't touched a clarinet or a saxophone in years.

See what one little close-up photo of a viola can do to a person?

Rinkly, I hope the cruise was fantastic! I will keep checking for photos until they appear..

Carolina, thank you! I like you too and should probably figure out this whole following thing.. much easier than manually visiting blogs to check for updates!
I think a small part of me will regret it, but a much larger part of me knows that if I haven't missed playing enough to pick it back up in the past 8 years, it's just not going to happen.

Wil, I love the sonatas too! Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed by the sound of a full orchestra, it's nice to hear just a couple of voices at once.

rhymeswithplague, my choice of instrument was also largely circumstantial, so I know what you mean. On the day they brought all the instruments to school for us to try, I started to go with my friend who wanted to try the violin. But the line to play it was absurdly long, whereas only a couple people were in line for the viola ;) I was often glad it turned out that way though, because I did fall in love with its mellow voice over the years. I'm glad that you turned out happy with at least a couple of your choices too--and jealous that you can play so many instruments!

Oh you lovely Picture Each Day, welcome to my list of 'followers'. Hopefully you will not be disappointed ;-)

Frost usually visits us each year, but this winter it kept (and keeps) coming back. I don't mind the seasons, each has their own charm, but currently I would very much like to live somewhere warm and sunny. Texas sounds good ;-)
