ABC Wednesday: I is for..

I is for Iris, one of my favorite flowers!

Last June, my family vacationed for a few days on Cape Cod, and one of those days we spent touring the island of Martha's Vineyard. Among many other claims to fame (for instance, the filming location of Jaws), the island is home to the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association--the campground-formerly-known-as "Wesleyan Grove."

Back in the mid-19th century, some Methodists used to congregate there once a year for a big religious "camp meeting." In the beginning families would stay in tents, but over the years the tents morphed into tiny cottages. They are all brightly decorated--and so today known as gingerbread houses--because families would try to outdo each other. A huge number of these houses have been preserved, and they've even turned one of them into a pretty neat little museum. That top picture is one of the gingerbread houses, with a sign reading "Iris House" and a yard filled with irises.

Our vacation on Cape Cod was a celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of my Papa and Gram, whose name is Iris. As you can maybe tell from the picture below, they have the same haircut, and almost identical gray coloring. Maybe it's true that people start to look alike after spending their lives together ;)

Beautiful photo of the gingerbread house with irises. My son and family spent a few days camping on Cape Cod last summer. I'll have to ask him if they saw these beautiful houses.
Couples who've been together for so long are lucky indeed. Happy anniversary to them.

Thank you all; I appreciate your very kind comments :)

Janie, did they camp in a tent? That sounds so fun! A different kind of vacation from staying in a beach house, for sure. I didn't even know there were places to camp on the Cape.

Carolina, I sincerely hope that isn't true.. I'll turn into a stocky, barrel-chested, square-headed monster!
