This one was posing prettily and cooing softly outside my window this morning :) They're called Mourning Doves because their coos sound so sad. You can hear one at this website.
Every week a whole group of bloggers participates in ABC Wednesday. Check out the website to see what they all have to offer this week!

Nice bird... :)
"This call may be mistaken for the hooting of a distant owl." (from the website).
That's true, I have heard it before; I listened the site's sound and now I know what it was...
Thank you.
I have another "bird" up - the Morning Moth.
Oh, so it wasn't an owl I heard growing up, it was a mourning dove!
Nice photo though...
R&J and Mara, thanks :)
I've also thought they were owls in the past, when I've heard but not seen them..
Yes, and some years ago I even wrote a story "how owls are hooting around our tent" :)
They sound somewhat similar to our Collared Doves - they look similar too!
If anything, our doves are even more mournful.
R & J, second-guessing yourself on that one now? ;)
Jay, I just looked at some pictures of Collared Doves, and I see what you mean! Doves have such a unique shape, don't they? I wonder if they are all as mournful sounding.
That's a sweet dove portrait. Like Jay, we have Collared Doves. We watched a pair mating, and now only one is visiting. Time to watch out for the babies I think!
