S is for Saint under some Spanish Moss
At least, I think he is a saint. Does anyone happen to know which one?
Update: He is St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment :) I think it might be the exact statue pictured on wikipedia, in fact. Thanks to Janie and an anonymous reader!
We find Spanish moss all over the South, but especially on our Live Oaks. Don't let its pretty face fool you - it's actually harmful to the trees. It is also not a moss (or a lichen), but I guess it looks like some varieties; hence the name.
I took the first shot at the previously featured Destrehan Plantation in New Orleans. The second is from kayaking on the South Carolina barrier islands last Thanksgiving.
I guess Saturday night is a bit late for ABC Wednesday, but I'm headed over to the site now to see what 'S' posts we have this week, so I thought I ought to go ahead and post mine, too ;P

I love the way the statue sits under that tree. It looks so peaceful and if someone is watching over you when it's a bit less peaceful.
The statue is St. Francis of Assissi, I think. If I remember right, he's the patron saint of animals and is often featured in gardens with birds perching on his shoulder, etc.
I've been to Destrehan. Used to live in the New Orleans area. The Spanish moss is romantic, anyway, even if not good for trees.
UT columbines are white in the wild. The ones I pictured are in my garden, from seed.
The statute is a depiction of St. Francis of Assisi.In the Roman Catholic Church, we honor St. Francis as a patron of all animals - A certain day is named as a Feast Day for each saint, to commemorate their lives. October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis. In many of the area's Catholic Churches on October 4th, St. Francis is commemorated by the Blessing of Animals. This for me is profound to watch for there comes a positive change over an animal with the blessing.

I was just going to say 'it looks like Francis of Assisi' when I read further on and saw that you had already found out that it was indeed he!
I wouldn't recognise many saints, but it's a pose St Francis is often portrayed in, I think. Lovely picture under the tree. Perhaps he's waiting for birds and squirrels!
