At least, I'm pretty sure it's a western conifer seed bug, based on this website. I thought it might instead be a western leaf-footed bug, but according to this website, all western leaf-footed bugs have a thick, jagged white line across their wings, and I did not see that on this one.
We find these guys in the house occasionally. My family calls them "banana bugs," because when we smash them they smell like very ripe bananas to us.
I didn't smash this one; I took him outside.

Oh, he's a pretty little guy! How could you smash them??? Meanie!
Some of these 'shield' bugs have quite different markings as juveniles, and get closer and closer to the adult appearance as they moult, so he still might be a leaf-footed bug! :)
They are neat looking bugs, aren't they? What can I say? We're just bad people :P
