I just noticed this huge scratch on my car today. I'm not sure if you can tell in the photo, but it extends all the way back over my rear wheel. How and when did this happen?!? I almost never look at the passenger side, I realized, so it could be weeks old. I have no way of knowing. What I do know is that I have certainly not scraped the car on anything while driving. Someone must have scratched it in a parking lot, I guess. But part of it is not so much a scratch as just an enormous chunk of paint taken off - I mean, could it really have happened from a shopping cart accidentally crashing into my car? It's so huge that it almost looks like it had to be intentional, doesn't it? But is anyone really that big a jerk?
Yikes. :(

I scratched a brand new Porsche some years ago. Too busy getting out of the parking lot to pick up my children after job.
The whole side of the black car had got a tiny line. But I got hold of the owner and paid the costs for the recovery. He was grateful that I made the contact, so everything ended good. But I never forget the sound of the two cars coming in contact, and the sound of coins running out of my wallet.
That's a bummer about the car since you don't know where it happened and can't access a security camera :-(
Thanks for your thoughtful reply on my blog. It makes sense that you know something if it's proven in a mathematical formula...as for the rest of it, it's hard to know! I decided to continue to use quotes, no matter what Emerson has to say about it.
ArneA, what terrible luck that it had to be the most expensive car in the lot! It was very decent of you to contact the owner and pay for the damage. Not everyone would do that, as you see here..
mountain.mama, I'm glad that was your decision :)
